Why did he say it?

Gary Paulsen just finished his first Iditarod race from Anchorage to Nome. It took him seventeen days to run it and he states that he will "be back to run it again."

Based on the last chapter of Woodsong, explain why Paulsen never thought he would ever say he would race in the Iditarod again ( End p. 132). Support your answer with relevant and specific details from the novel.

  1. Gary Paulsen never thought he would say he would race race in the Iditarod again because he had a lot of difficulties during the race. Fo example, there were times when he was having hallucinations because of the cold weather. Another example was when the sides of his throat froze and he was choking on mucus. Also on the very first day of the Iditarod he was lost because his leader took a wrong turn. This shows that all the hard time that Gary paulsen had might make him not want to race again.

  2. Gary Paulsen Thought he wouldn't say it because he suffered enough and lost. Gary Paulsen caught his knee on a sharp snag and he got his kneecap loose. This shows that Gary doesn't want to go in the race because he got hurt many times in the race. Gary Paulsen got attacked by a bear one time and got hurt. This shows that he is tired of getting attacked b y animals and he doesn't want it to happen again.

  3. Gary Paulsen never thought he would ever say he would ever say he would race in the Iditarod again because he would probably get sick again because it happened before and it would happen again. Gary Paulsen never thought he would ever say he would race in the Iditarod again because he could hallucinate again. Gary Paulsen never thought he would ever say he would race in the Iditarod again because he could hurt himself again. Gary Paulsen could hurt himself again because last time popped his knee cap off when he was running the dogs. My work shows that Gary Paulsen never thought he would ever say that he would race in Iditarod again because some situations could threaten his life.

  4. Gary Paulsen thought he would never say he will "Be back an run it again". One reason why he thought he would never say that is because all that he's been through. He has been through so much, Snowy weather caused him to get sick, death of a dog, and hallucination. The snowy weather caused him to get sick, on page 80, in the first paragraph he write " Fifty-three below one night and Forty-five below the next two". Then he also got hurt training the dogs. On page 26, He wrote "As i kicked sideways and caught my knee on a sharp snag, felt the wood enter under my kneecap and tear it loose". Also if you get too cold in snowy weather you can die of hypothermia. Another reason is if you get hurt in the woods and no one is out there with you, it can be a dangerous health hazard.

  5. Gary Paulsen thought he never say he will race in iditarod because so many bad things have happen to him. Like in page when went the wrong way 50 mile. When gary was hallucination during the iditarod. Many bad things has to him. Gary Paulsen got hallucination when it was cold maybe e would not go to the wrong way if he was not hallucination

  6. the reason he said that was he made lots of mistakes .so he did not want to have it happen again. sense he is alive he will give it another shot . example of mistakes is how his neck froze. he just wanted to run with some air so thats why he did not give up just to do it better .

  7. Gary Paulsen said he won't race again because he's always hurt. One reason why he won't race again because he tore his kneecap. Another reason why he won't race again is because the dogs bit him on the leg. Another reason why why he won't race again is because he is always falling off the sled. Another reason is because when he tore his kneecap he fell off the sled falling off a cliff 20 feet after 20 feet onto his knee. He won't race again because he is always hurt and he can be ended up in a hospital getting surgery or any other treatments.

  8. The reasons why he thought he wont race again.
When he got sick and every time he trowed up the dogs will go back to eat it. That is nasty and makes him even more sock and that will make him far behind in the iditarod like every dang time going back and forward with trow up. When he gets hallucinations he goes crazy and that might bother the dogs. They might get lost again in the iditarod. Like when they went Fifty miles in the wrong direction. That would be far behind by 1 day or more. He could get hurt again like his kneecap could can slow him down and maybe if it hurts to much he would have to stop racing maybe. When he gets sick he goes crazy gets lazy falls asleep doesn't know what he id doing. The dogs getting lost might might make them days behind. If he gets injured he has to waste time and who knows what else might happen. This shows the reasons why he wouldn't wanna race.

  9. Gary Paulsen never thought he would ever say he would would race in the Iditarod again because the race is dangerous. One reason the race is dangerous because he got LOST. This makes the race dangerous or scary because what if he doesn't find his way back..., he would stay stuck in the middle of nowhere. Another reason this race is dangerous because its very long and he crashes into bolders and stuff. This makes the race dangerous because he gets injured very bad or he could just die. This shows the reasons why Gary Paulsen never thought he would say he would race again because of all the hard times he been having in the wilderness.

  10. Gary Paulsen thought he would never say, “ I’ll race in the Iditarod” again because it was too hard for him. Here are three examples of Gary Paulsen going through a challenging situation. First challenging situation is that Gary Paulsen had to except extreme conditions of the race. These conditions are hard for him because they are serious and sometimes life threatening. These conditions are, him hallucinating, lack of sleep, hypothermia or him getting extremely cold. What also makes it hard for him is to go through these conditions are painful. The second hard condition for him is making sure his dog’s stamina is 100% while starting the race and finishing the race. This is challenging because for one, the steps of that process is challenging alone, let alone actually making sure there 100% because you cant really tell you have to infer. The last challenging situation is making sure both him and the dogs are well fed. This is challenging because if the dogs and Gary Paulsen aren’t well fed they wont have the energy to race. An example of this in the book wood song is that Gary Paulsen dogs wont eat their food so Gary had to sacrifice his own food and eat sticks of butter. This is challenging because Gary Paulsen is forced to eat sticks of butter because if he doesn’t he wont have the energy to race. If the dog didn’t eat his food that probably would of slowed down his sled. For these exact reasons, Gary Paulsen didn’t think he would race in the Iditarod again because it was to hard.

  11. Gary Paulsen thought that he wouldn’t have ever race again because of what happened to him when he was racing in the Iditarod. One piece of evidence from the book is when he got lost. When Gary Paulsen got lost he had a hard time finding a way back and this made him not want to race again. Another reason why Gary Paulsen said he never thought he would race again is when Gary Paulsen gets sick during the Iditarod. Because when he was racing he was hallucination why’ll he was racing. Gary Paulsen has been saying there was a guy doing things and annoying him when it was really all in his mind which made Gary Paulsen very uncomfortable and that’s why it made Gary Paulsen not want to race again.

  12. Gary Paulsen thought he would never race again because of some of the things that happen to him. One thing that happen to him is he got lost. " I go up to the front of the team in the darkness and drag them around, realizing we are lost." This shows maybe why he would never race again because he got lost. Another thing is he froze his neck and his blood vessels in his throat burst. It says," but the cold raw air freezes the sides of my throat and blood vessels burst." This shows why Gary Paulsen thought he would never race again because he bursted his blood vessels.

  13. Gary Paulsen thought he would never race in the Iditarod again because the race was very difficult,he got sick early in the race he had to stick his finger down his throat an that made him even more sick. This shows that this made the race very difficult an he didn't want to race again because the race made him sick. Another reason he didn't want to race again was because the race was very long.He had to go across oceans, mountain rages. He even said that the race was too long, ( p. 131.) "Not something that can be done".The race was difficult because since the race was too long it's hard to complete.

  14. Gary Paulsen thought he wouldn't want to race again because one he got lost a couple of times. He got lost when he wanted to go his own way and the dogs knew where to go. Second, he got lost when he fell down the mountain. Third Gary Paulsen got lost because when he was racing he didn't know where to go he got lost and had to follow the other dogs.
I know this because in the article it says that he yelled and threw them to go where he wanted to go. Also i know he fell down the mountain because when the dogs went the way he wanted them to go they fell down a mountain.

  15. The reason why Gary Paulsen said he will never race in the Iditarod is because. One day Gary Paulsen got lost a lot. For example when Paulsen was racing the dogs had went the wrong way. ut when he went the wrong way the people behind him followed him. So he had to tell them to turn and go back. By getting lost a lot that made Gary Paulsen aggravated and it made him feel like not finishing the race.

Another reason why Gary Paulsen did not want to finish the race is because Paulsen got injured a lot. For example when Paulsen was training he broke his leg really bad. This shows Gary Paulsen did not want to race because he was in a lot of pain. This might show why Paulsen did not want to race in the Iditarod.

  16. Gary Paulsen never thought he would ever say he would race in the Iditarod again because it was very difficult for him. He get lost sometimes because the dogs took the wrong trail. He got injured by the dogs a lot: "He made it downtown Anchorage on his face." And also he got lost the leader dog got lost by following a dog scent. All of this proves that he does not want to do the Iditarod because it is very difficult for him.

  17. Gary Paulsen never thought he would ever say hat he will race in the Iditarod again because he has too much bad luck. First, he always gets lost, every single time. Then he starts to hallucinate. He starts talking to his friend then tells him to shut up when there's is no one there. Another one is that since it's really cold, so he gets frostbites a lot, he probably even lost a toe. Then he gets embarrassed because a man said he heard someone say wily all night, and that person was Gary Paulsen was EMBARRASSED! And my last reason why Gary Paulsen never thought he would say he would race in the Iditarod is because of his dogs. They are always stopping and he always has to motivate them to move on. So this is why i think that Gary Paulsen said he never thought he would say what he said.

  18. Gary Paulsen never thought that he would ever say that he would race in the iditarod again because it took him a long time and it was difficult. It took Gary Paulsen 17 days to finish the race, he helusinated a lot while he was in the iditarod. His blood vesiles pop'ed and mucus would acumulate on his throat when he would pull the mucus out the dogs ate it and he puked. He would get lost when the dogs would chase rabbits. This shows that he did not think that he would say that he will do the iditarod again because it took him a long time but it also was very difficult for him. But he still did it again.

  19. Gary Paulsen never thought he would say he would race the Iditarod because of all the pain and work he had to go through. He got hurt while training the dogs. On page 26 it states, "the dogs stayed on the trail but I immediately lost all control and went flying out in to space with the sled. As I did, I kicked side ways and caught my knee on a sharp snag, felt the wood enter under the kneecap and tear it loose." He got himself hurt badly during the training so why would he want to race again. He also hallucinated during the race and training for the race. On page 96 states, "sleep deprivation catches me and I start hallucinating." He kept hallucinating throughout the race and that got him annoyed, why would he race again to go through that again? Gary also had a really bad cold during the training of the Iditarod. On page 81 it states, "but on the morning of the third day I became violently ill." He felt really sick because of the really cold weather so why would he want to get sick like that again? All of this shows that Gary would really not want to go on the difficult yet annoying race.

  20. so the blog that i am going to write is that of nazis taking over a town called innsburck and they have to escape the town before the nazis are able to capture them and bring them to the prison that they call a camp so therefore they have to do a night crossing[a night crossing is a looong walk to a different place or a state so that they can be free often from the nazis] they had to sell all of their valuables and they finally had enough money to stow away in shacks and they had also got money for food by selling their treasured items they eventually went to switzerland and then they all walked to england

  21. Gary Paulsen never thought he would say he would race the Iditarod again because of all the times he got hurt. On page 92 his face is bleeding and his clothes are ripped up. Page 102 He gets out the gorge all messed up. "Tattered, bleeding, ragged, and stunned". As you can see, with all of the things that happened to him and more, he thought he wouldn't even finish the race. When he finally passed the finish line he thought of it again. Thought of how happy it made him feel, and knew he would do it again.
